Frequently Asked Questions

How do I view my grades online?
Click on the “Parent Portal” button on the Hinsdale District 86 website (www.hinsdale86.org) and follow the instructions.

How do I register if I have more than one student?
If you are registering more than one student enter the first student, then click “Add” and a second student registration box will appear.  Once you have registered one, or two, or three students, then click “Submit Request.”  Do not click “Submit Request” until you have entered all of the students you are requesting access for.

Is the Parent Portal secure?
The Web site you are viewing is a secure site. It uses a security protocol called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to secure the information you send and receive.  When sites use a security protocol, information that you provide, such as your name or password, is encrypted so that other people can’t read it.

What if I think there are inaccuracies in the grade reporting?
The Parent Portal pulls data directly from the teacher Gradebook and updates this information after a nightly download.  If you feel there is a grade discrepancy, please have a conversation with your child to gain clarity on what assignment/grades have been returned, and whether the teacher has shared any information that may resolve the discrepancy.  Check back at a later time to see if the discrepancy has been updated.

Should the grade discrepancy still be unresolved, we encourage the student to meet with the teacher to address the issue.  Lastly, if no progress has been made between the teacher and the student, we are always open to having our parents make contact with the classroom teacher to bring clarity to the situation.

How often are grades updated?
The answer to this question can vary depending on the teacher, course, and nature of assignment.   District 86 teachers work extremely hard and effectively to provide accurate and ongoing feedback of student progress and performance.  We ask for your patience as teachers keep their Gradebook updated in a timely manner, and encourage you to have conversation with your student to answer some of these questions.

I receive an error when I try to login.  What should I do?
When you receive an error message or have trouble logging in there are a few possible causes that may include:

1.      The username and password are not accurately typed in; please try again. Make sure you are using the backslash \ if you do not use the backslash \ you will see the following:

2.      You  have the “caps lock” button engaged

3.      The District 86 network is experiencing difficulties; please wait and retry at a  later time

If you still have difficulty with your login after troubleshooting with the items above, then please contact either: (see contacts above)

I do not see grade reports for all classes.  Why?
All District 86 teachers are using the online Gradebook for their classes.  The Parent Portal automatically pulls the grade and assignment summaries from every teacher’s Gradebook, so there should not be any classes that are without grade information (expect at the beginning of each quarter when limited amount of grades are in the system).

Please contact the teacher if you don’t see any grade reports for their particular class.

Why do I see different codes entered in the assignment summary page?

When entering scores into the Gradebook, teachers may use unique grade codes for assignments beyond the typical numerical value. When viewing your child’s assignment summary please pay attention to the different marks to help clarify what occurred for each particular assignment. The information below will define these special codes used for missing or no credit grades.

Special Marks:

  • Blank Space - If a grade is left blank, it simply has not yet been recorded. It has no impact on the student’s final grade.

  • “Exmp” – This indicates the student was exempt or excused from the assignment. It has no impact on the student’s final grade.

  • “Inc” - This indicates that the student has not completed the assignment; it is missing. This grade computes as a score of zero and negatively impacts the student’s final grade.

  • “0” - A grade of zero indicates that the student did complete the assignment, but received no credit. This negatively impacts the student’s final grade.
