Teachers' Domain, How Do You Get to the Moon?, published January 29, 2004, retrieved on October 15, 2008,

We often take for granted the 3 common phases of matter--solids, liquids, and gases--that occur all around us but most of us especially take for granted the 4th state of matter, plasmas--that is perhaps the most common form of matter found in the heart of stars and soon to be found in your television and computer displays.  Someday we might even understand better the 'secret' 5th state of matter that even Mr. Einstein himself was exploring in the power of his imagination!

How does salt spread on the roads help prevent dangerous icy conditions?  Why would farmers spray oranges with water and allow them to freeze when temperatures dip dangerously low in order to prevent a crop loss?  How come if you are baking brownies there are always directions on the box for "High Altitude" cooking if you're in Denver, CO vs. Chicago, IL?  In these activities you will be exploring the fundamental nature of matter as it exists in its natural states as well as its unique properties as a gas.  Enjoy!  :)
