Protein

The protein that is responsible for the symptoms of Huntington disease is called huntingtin. This is the protein made from the gene at 4p16.3, as discussed earlier. Although scientists don't know how this particular mutation causes a change in function for the protein, they do know how the protein is mutated to cause Huntington disease. A normal version of this protein follows:

The Q (Glutamine) repeat seen at the top of this sequence (in red) holds the key to the understanding of Huntington disease. It determines whether the person will be suffering from the disease or not. To be more specific, the DNA sequence determines the protein sequence, which in turn determines the outcome of the disease. If a person has a small glutamine repeat, he is normal. A moderate length repeat may cause the person's children to develop the disease. Finally, a long repeat will cause Huntington disease.
