Tourettes Basic Facts

 

v    Protein- SLIT and NTRK-like family, member 1, play a role in development of nerve and brain cells.

v    Gene Location- 13q31.1

v    Inheritance- Unknown. At first was thought to be an Autosomal dominant trait, but it was proven wrong. Seen in clusters in families, mostly males.

v    Prognosis- There is no established cure, although it can improve with age, meaning that as a person who suffers from tourettes gets older, they can control it better.

v    Onset- Always less then 18 years of age, generally around ages two or three.

v    Symptoms- Tics (rapid movements or sounds repeated over and over with no apparent pattern; brief, repetitive, and unpredictable) or Coprolalia (a complex and rare vocal tic, the outburst of obscenities and curse words.)
