Sleep in a Box 2004 October 16-17, 2004
Thank you for all of your support this past weekend to help make our Hinsdale South Habitat for Humanity chapter's Sleep in a Box Homeless simulation-fundraiser a success. Over thirty students braved the cold weather and wind to sleep in a box and raise money for the projects of DuPage Habitat for Humanity. All told, $5000 was raised, with one student bringing in nearly $1000 and another $300. A check will be presented to DuPage Habitat for Humanity at their next monthly meeting in November. Sheila Frett, executive director of DuPage Habitat for Humanity, spoke to the students Saturday evening. She brought the message that the Hinsdale South Chapter was the first high school chapter and continues to be the most involved in DuPage. She praised the students fundraising efforts stating "the money that you have raised will put the roof on the next Habitat for Humanity project." She also applauded our use of the Hinsdale South Habitat web site to deliver information to its members as well as show the projects that we have worked on. Over the past four years Hinsdale South's chapter has been involved in three different build projects in, Westmont, Romeoville, and Glendale Heights. During the same period of time the Sleep in a Box fundraiser for DuPage Habitat for Humanity has grown to be a yearly event at Hinsdale South. The sponsors, Mary Zaleski and Matthew Gawlik would like to thank Buildings and Grounds, especially Don Vanerka, as well as Student Activities Director, Brett Goad and Principal Claudia Geocaris for all of the support that they have provided to make this event a success each year.
