The ACT Writing Section

ACT now offers an optional Writing Test.  Each college or university has decided how they want to use this score during the admissions process.

Schools can either:
  • Require the writing section
  • Recommend the writing section
  • Or designate that the writing section is not needed

ACT recommends that you decide whether to take the Writing Test based on the requirements of the institutions to which you are applying.  However, we recommend that all students take the writing test to insure that all of their options remain open.

Below are links to lists of institutions in Illinois and the collar states that require the ACT Writing Section as of January 2006.
