John Scheafer was the first gymnastics coach for Hinsdale Central High School. He not only designed but built the gymnastics gym. He was the master mind behind the now Nationally know successful program. His "Acro Imp" community program was the first "club" gymnastics in the state. He ran summer camps, park district programs, held clinics, age group meets, and even a Pentathlon at Butler polo fields with the Governors' help. John was ahead of his time working with the age group program through the high school and organizing as well as hosting state wide meets such as the Northern Illinois Gymnastics Invitational. John Scheafer was truly a pioneer and brilliant organizer that lead to a renown successful gymnastics program that is a "model of action"

Coach Schaefer Cites 8 years at HT: When head coach John Schaefer leaves Hinsdale this year after 8 years to become an Assistant professor of Physical Education at Wisconsin State Oshkosh, he will miss coaching gymnastics but not his study halls. Coach Schaefer, who used to enjoy performing on the flying rings, which are obsolete, pegged the side horse as his best apparatus for coaching. This coaches best is mighty fine as it was just last year, in what has to be one of his most glorious moments at HT, when Craig Kinsey got 2nd in State in front of TV cameras on the side horse. "Many schools don't have the facilities that Hinsdale Central has, therefore, the students should feel privileged rather than forced to participate in weight training, gymnastics and swimming, etc.  Coach Schaefer still keeps in shape by lifting weights. He also participates in biking, riding to and from school each day (a 22 mile trip). "Gymnastics is not considered a major sport, nor is it treated like a major sport here. Some people feel gymnasts have their own little world of P-Bars and trampolines." Coach Schaefer is always coming up with different ways of teaching us something. I remember him as a general inspiration who always had time for the team, whether in season or out and during the summer, said Tom Johnson speaking on behalf of the team...   (Hinsdale Courier - school newspaper 1966)
