Mentor Program

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 continues to further the growth and development of teachers. Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South rely upon experienced teachers to aid new teachers in becoming acclimated to each building. It is the goal of this program, beginning in 1999, to promote a district-wide community in which new teachers to District 86 will share strengths to make a stronger organization. The mentor partnership will enhance teaching and learning within the district.

Mission
The goal of the program is to further the growth and development of the teacher new to District 86. The focus of the program is based upon what takes place in the classroom. Issues regarding motivation and attentiveness of students, effectiveness and organization of lessons, teacher-student interaction, and teacher encouragement are among a number of elements examined by mentor and protégé. As a district program, it is important to include the new teacher in the community of educators and learners through working with a teaching partner and advocate.

Mentor partners will work together in a number of ways to cover the following areas:
Develop insights concerning curricular and personal needs of students
Familiarize new teachers with learning styles and strategies
Implement education training, experiences, and professional growth opportunities in order for the teacher partner to improve instructional practices
Recognize classroom and student cues and feedback in order that the teacher responds in a positive fashion
Familiarize and implement skills that improve the delivery of curriculum
Familiarize teachers with an array of options to deal with student behavior and levels of learner readiness
Develop a system of collegial sharing of experiences that becomes a fundamental part of problem-solving methodology
Acquaint new staff with district goals and procedures as well as personnel and available services
Foster a working commitment and dedication to the district and each school
