Intra-District Transfers

As part of the request, the parent/guardian must acknowledge that:

• Transportation is the parent/guardian’s responsibility if the request is approved
• Transfers may be rescinded due to concerns related to behavior, attendance, or academic performance
• Academic programs and course offerings may differ between schools
• The IHSA makes final determinations regarding student-athlete eligibility

An Intra-District Transfer Agreement must be also be completed before an approved transfer is implemented.

Each request is reviewed individually by the building principal of the student’s assigned school. The principal may collaborate with parents, educators, or others as part of the review. The assigned school then forwards the request and supporting documentation to the Superintendent for review and determination. The review process may take several weeks.

The Superintendent notifies the parent/guardian in writing by email.

• If the request is denied, the reason for denial will be communicated.
• If the request is approved, the family will receive next steps and implementation requirements. The assigned school and receiving school will also be notified.

Before the transfer can take effect, the parent/guardian and student must complete an Intra-District Transfer Agreement with the registrar at the receiving school. This agreement outlines the terms and conditions of the transfer, including:

• Duration of transfer
• Academic expectations
• Student conduct expectations
• Parent transportation requirement
• Athletics and IHSA eligibility
• Special programs and services are not guaranteed
• Revocation conditions
• Individual student basis
• No precedent for future requests

After the agreement is completed, the receiving school registrar assists the family with registration and the district updates the student’s enrollment records.

Families should be aware of the following:

• Approval depends on available space and the student being better accommodated at the requested school.
• Transportation is not provided by the district.
• Transfers may be revoked for attendance, academic, or disciplinary concerns; falsified or withheld information; changes in enrollment, staffing, or program availability; or failure to comply with the agreement.
• Approval is granted on an individual student basis only and does not apply automatically to siblings or future requests.

Students approved for intra-district transfer are not guaranteed placement in specific academic programs, electives, extracurricular activities, or athletic eligibility. Athletic eligibility is governed by IHSA rules and regulations.
